Chapter Two

“This is going to be a disaster,” Heavenleigh muttered studying her reflection in the mirror

The past few months, her parents had been pushing the idea of a family down her throat. She didn’t buy her. Her mother hadn’t looked right since she’d “gotten back together” with daddy dearest. The light had gone out behind her eyes

“Why? They’re trying,” Yophiel said. “I thought that would please you.”

She studied his creased forehead in the mirror and smiled. Turning, she leaned back against the sink. “You still have much to learn about emotions. The strain between both of them makes me skittish. I don’t understand why they’re pretending.”

“She has much to answer for,” he said tilting his head to the side

“Yes, but this runs deeper than that. It’s like there’s an undercurrent there I can’t put my finger on.” She frowned. “I might be pissed at my mom, but I don’t want to see her hurt.”

“I believe that is inevitable. I may not know about many things. But I understand betrayal.” His voice lowered, and his eyes flashed golden

Entranced she remained silent

“Once trust is broken, it’s nearly impossible to fully restore, and what she took from him is the one thing he’d always wanted.”

“A child?” She wrinkled her nose. “Doesn’t sound like the dude from the black book.”

“No,” he shook his head, “a family to love and be loved by unconditionally. He saw Father’s creations as a slight against us, the Angels. He believed it was a sign of abandonment, and displeasure. An attempt to get it right the second time.”

“You seem to know a lot about how my father thinks. It’s scary.”

Yophiel frowned. “He was very vocal, and quite convincing. Enough to gather an army for war, I remember it all clearly. We all do, because we never want to see it repeated. Many were lost to us during those days.” A wealth of pain lay in his voice

She wrapped her arms around his waist and rested her head on his chest. “I always forget how old you are. I’m used to teaching you the ways of the world. But in comparison to you, I’m not even an embryo. I’m sorry for the pain you must’ve endured. I can’t imagine being pitted against those I loved.”

“It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, picking up a weapon and wielding it against my brothers and sisters. We are warriors, but we are not without feelings. I believe it broke something inside each us, and that is why we see so many fall.”

“Are there that many?” Heavenleigh asked.

“Quite a few over time, usually they leave in clusters, too afraid to go it alone. I never understood the desire, until you.”

She leaned back and studied her handsome protector. The other half of her soul, who’d, shared his grace to neutralize the demon blood running through her veins. “I love you, Angel man.”

“And I love you.” He leaned down and their lips connected

Tiny explosions burst behind her eyes. Electrical impulses ran through her body.
